WALK ON!

Several members made the symbolic walk from the new Goldstone Ground Heritage Board to the American Express Community Stadium via Withdean on the morning of 6 August, before the first league match at the new stadium against Doncaster Rovers.

Supporters' Club chairman John Hewitt, vice-chairman Liz Costa and secretary Sarah Watts set off at about 9.30. "It was a lovely walk," said Sarah. "There was a lengthy hill to the golf course at Hollingbury, but it was worth it for the first view of the stadium, still two miles away, framed between the hills. Fortunately it was all downhill from then on!" The party took about two-and-three-quarter hours to complete the 6.4 mile walk.
Tim Carder, who devised the route, set off a bit later. "We were a little slower, " he said, "but then we did call at the Withdean Sportsman for half an hour – and we did kick a football all the way from Hove Park to Falmer! How symbolic is that?"

Another member to make the walk was Colin Belsey. He said, "Having been a fan since 1968 and refusing to even drive past the Goldstone Retail Park since the closure of our beloved ground, this was a brilliant idea and it has truly laid the ghost of The Goldstone to rest for me. We did the walk prior to the Donny game – an excellent start to the day and it carried on that way!"

Anyone fit enough can do this walk at their own pace and at a time to suit.
